Chapter 18

The Rain and the Broken Screen

The silence in the Cistern was now absolute, almost unnatural. The water was a black mirror that no longer reflected terror, but an unsettling stillness. The oppressive Aura of Grief was gone, leaving only the silence of a freshly emptied tomb.

I was still kneeling, trembling from the exhaustion and the reverberation of the energy that had come from my Core. The fusion with the "Fragment of Forgotten Judgment" had been intense, a flood of data my mind was still struggling to process, like downloading an entire encyclopedia over a modem connection.

Elira was beside me, her form now completely solid, though the weariness in her posture was noticeable. She placed a hand on my shoulder, a surprisingly comforting gesture.

"Breathe, Hikaru. The worst is over. You did it. Surprisingly."

I looked at her. Seeing her there, so real, after what we had been through, was... strange. And not unpleasant.

"The... the fragment..." I muttered, touching the crystal on my wrist, which now seemed a little more complete, its light a little brighter, as if a new line of code had been integrated.

[ESSENCE CORE – STATUS UPDATED (And with fewer errors, we hope)]

SYNCHRONIZATION: 15% (Progress! At this rate, you might just make it before the next ice age!)

FRAGMENTS RESTORED: 2 of 9

• Fragment 1: Memory – “The Rain and the Broken Screen” (Locked)

• Fragment 2: Memory – “The Code of the Silent Guardian” (Partial Access Unlocked. Prepare for a possible headache.)

"'The Code of the Silent Guardian,'" I read aloud, and the name resonated within me. "What is that supposed to...?"

Before I could finish, a new sensation washed over me. A sudden mental clarity, followed by a torrent of images, sounds, and emotions that were not mine... or perhaps they were, from a forgotten life. It was as if a locked door in my mind had been thrown open.

Rain striking a window. Reflections of green lines of code dancing on a monitor. My fingers flying over a keyboard. A screen full of diagrams, algorithms, simulations of virtual worlds. A feeling of intense concentration, of being on the verge of something great. A figure beside me, a blurred face—my father? a mentor?—supervising my work.

Then, the screen flickered. An error. A foreign code was infiltrating, corrupting my lines. A cold, logical panic. I tried to isolate it, but it was too fast, too... alien, like a virus from another universe.

The figure beside me tensed. A choked cry. And then, the screen broke. Not physically. As if reality itself had fractured, a blinding light, a sound like a million shattering crystals, an unbearable pain...

I gasped, back in the Cistern, my heart racing, trembling. The memory was short, fragmented, but so vivid I could smell the ozone of that room and feel the pressure in my temples.

"Hikaru? What's wrong? You're as pale as a ghost!" Elira's voice snapped me out of the trance.

"I... I remembered something," I said, my voice shaking. "Something from... before. Computers. Code. A storm... and something went wrong. Very wrong. A broken screen.
